“Do something now. If not you, who?” – Theodore Roosevelt

My friend Pete came up to me at the gym a few weeks ago and said, “Rita, do you know what today is?” Trying to quickly scan my brain for summer holidays I immediately knew it wasn’t the 4th of July nor was it Labor Day.

Curiously I said, “No Pete, I don’t know what today is, what is today?” He smiled with a grin as big as the state of Texas and said, “It’s one day closer to Football Season.”

Football Season

Football season brings different thoughts and images to many people; fantasy football, packed stadiums, sports bars filled with fans donning their favorite player’s jerseys – all very familiar images for the season.

However, none of those scenarios are top of mind when I hear the word football. Tucked away in the recesses of my mind is an inspiring, life-impacting story I read 4 years ago about NFL’s Seattle Seahawk’s quarterback Russell Wilson.

When Russell was a young boy, his father challenged his young son with three simple words,

Why Not You?

Today, I am challenging you develop the mindset of Why Not You.

What is the Why Not You that you are facing?

  • Perhaps you are a stay at home mom wondering if there is more to life than sleepless nights, teething babies, slobber and poop.
  • Maybe you have a strong entrepreneurial spirit but you’re experiencing self-doubt and wondering if you have what it takes to be successful.
  • It’s possible that you are feeling unfulfilled in your current career and you’re thinking that there has to be more to life.

Regardless of your current situation, my question to you is, Why Not You?

At Home Entrepreneur

In today’s post, I am going to share four keys with you so that regardless of where you are in life, you can make an immediate mindset switch so you can live out your own Why Not You.

If you desire to be a stay at home mom and watch your kids grow up, you’re living your Why Not You.  Remember that everything in life is just for a season.  Don’t be surprised if during, or at the end of your stay at home season, you become the next Debra Cohen.

Debra was a high powered, successful business woman who decided to leave the corporate world to stay home and raise her daughter.  In that season of her life, she borrowed $5,000 from her husband’s pension and started a contractor referral company, Home Remedies of NY, Inc.

Today, Home Remedies has a current estimated worth of 4.5 million dollars.  Not bad for a stay at home mom start up job.  Coming from a once stay at home mom myself, I’m asking you,

Why Not You?

Intuition

If your entrepreneurial DNA is calling you to create something innovative, you might want to listen to your intuition instead of your fears. By embracing an entrepreneurial spirit, you will approach life feeling empowered and take things into your own hands. As an entrepreneur, you will need to train yourself to see solutions for problems rather than focusing on setbacks.

So the question remains, Why Not You?

Seek Fulfillment

If you are feeling unfulfilled in your career, the first step is to find out why.  Perhaps there are some changes you can make right where you’re at that will make all the difference in the world.  If after you’ve addressed your why, you still feel unfulfilled, it might be time to get to the heart of the matter and discover what you really want to contribute to in life.  Finding fulfillment is your key. Once you find it, the question remains,

Why Not You?

Four Keys to Finding Your Why Not You

Be curious with me and answer these 4 questions to give you a clearer view of how you can start your Why Not You thinking. I guarantee you that you will find that you have more answers to those questions than what you realize.

1. What’s in Your Hands?

Look at what you have in your hands. What are your top skill sets and what are some of the resources available to you?

2. What’s lacking in Your Industry?

Find the gap in your industry and be the solution to make it better.  Resourceful entrepreneurs look for the gap as if they were searching for buried treasure and come up with a new and novel way to fill it.

3. What are Your Creative Super Powers?

Slow down enough to be curious and nurture your creativity. Sometimes people are quick to sell themselves short rather than tapping into their creativity and unused potential.

4. What Obstacles are you encountering?

Be prepared – there will be obstacles ahead of you. Know that obstacles = opportunities.  When facing an obstacle, substitute the word obstacle for opportunity.

One of the greatest barriers to your success is you.  Fear of failure is an obstacle you are sure to encounter on your journey to success.  You must believe in yourself. Speak to the gremlins who shout in your ear, Why You?  And respond with a resounding, Why Not Me?

“Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling, as in all careers of importance, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats. Yet each struggle, each defeat, sharpens your skills and strengths, your courage and your endurance, your ability and your confidence and thus each obstacle is a comrade-in-arms forcing you to become better… or quit. Each rebuff is an opportunity to move forward; turn away from them, avoid them, and you throw away your future.”  – Og Mandino, The Greatest Salesman in the World

Russell Wilson

Let’s go back to football season and Russell Wilson. The young Russell Wilson embraced the words his father spoke to him as his life’s mantra.  Those three small words set a solid foundation for him; his hard work ethic, belief system, and the use of his talents.

Despite the fact that Russell was considered too short by NFL scouts to be drafted, he has gone on to not only play in the NFL, he holds the record for most wins by an NFL quarterback through seven seasons. He is one of two quarterbacks in NFL history with a career passing rate of over 100. He has also led the Seahawks to two super bowls; winning one of them.

The Power of Words

Words are tremendously powerful and those three simple words can catapult you to the pinnacle of what you’re aspiring to do or who you aspire to become.

Always remember that Why Not You is a way of life; it’s a mindset that instills confidence in yourself to not give up.

Next time you doubt yourself ask:

Are You Ready to Find Clarity and Focus?

Too many people settle in life. As children, we dream about what we want to be when we grow up. As adults, we shift that focus and work hard at what we want to do. We get so busy doing that we’ve forgotten who we want to be; consequently, many never fully become who they were intended to be.

If you aspire to have a blockbuster life, set a firm intention and with pen in hand write yourself into the hero’s role of your story.
